About Us

Living Against the Current is a family operated apiary and homestead that is focused on sustainable beekeeping. We handle every step of the process from caring for the bees to the harvesting and hand processing of the honey. Our bees are located in Dufferin County, Ontario.

Our blog follows our pathway to resilient living, practical skills and connecting physically to the world.

Our Story

In 2006 I met my husband. While getting to know each other we realized we both have always felt a little different about life. We realized that we wanted to go our own way, to form our own path. This often meant going against the “societal” current. We wanted more than what we called “the formula”. We wanted meaning, purpose and connection.

In 2008, instead of a large wedding, we got married on a canoe trip with only close family present.  We always felt a connection to nature and knew, when I became pregnant with our first, that we needed to leave the city. It was important for us to have our children grow up in a place with large trees that would encourage them to have a connection with nature.

Slowly our family has built a small homestead where we have learned to grow and preserve. This is where we began our beekeeping journey and it has allowed us to handcraft honey from our hives to share with our community.

In 2018 we expanded our love for natural spaces by purchasing raw land in a rural area of Northern Ontario. It is there that we practice off grid skills.
